Peppermint Heart Infusion Bags

making peppermint infusion bags
Handmade tokens are what Valentine's Day is made for. Those little notions of love. And the best are the ones that remind us we're loved in the most unexpected way.

This Valentine craft is intended for just that and is an unexpected pick-me-up when your favorite ones need it most. Be it with coffee in the morning or in a cup of hot tea during the afternoon lull, infusing their favorite beverage with peppermint will definitely refresh their spirits and put a smile on their sweet faces as they think of you.

supply list for making infusion bags
To make these for your special someone(s), you'll need the following supplies:
  • Coffee filters
  • Peppermint hard candies
  • Embroidery thread in colors of choice (or colored thread)
  • Sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Sieve + bowl
  • Plastic baggie
  • Pens in colors of choice
  • Cardstock paper or Scrapbook paper
crushed peppermint candies
Remove candy from wrapper. Place peppermints inside plastic bag and gently break up the candies. Your goal is to break each one into 3-5 large pieces opposed to smaller pieces that can spill from the seams.
crushed peppermint
Pour the crushed candy into the sieve and shake to remove the smaller pieces.
using coffee filters as tea bags
Next, take four coffee filters from the stack and gently fold them in half, trying not to create a hard crease as you fold.
heart shaped infusion bags
Cut your filters in the shape of a heart. This simple design is easy to cut free-hand.
two filters per infusion bag
Separate two of the heart shapes from the four, keeping them together as a pair.
seperating embroidery thread
Next, select your thread color and separate one strand of your embroidery thread from the skein.
how to sew together infusion bag
Start a whip stitch at the center of the heart's dip. Be sure to leave a tail of thread so that you can tie it together when you've completed your stitches.
fill bag with candy
Once you've sewn almost halfway up the other side of the heart, fill with crushed peppermints.

I used about 1 tsp per bag.

Complete your stitches. Once you've returned to the beginning, re-thread your last stitch into the hole of the first stitch, then tie off, leaving approximately 6" of thread.

Your completed piece should look something like this.

Your last step is to cut and embellish cardstock and scrapbook papers to create the paper tag at the end of each bag. (Bonus points to those of you who know the proper name for that piece of paper that hangs from the bag, 'cause neither Google nor I do!)

Once you've done that, you're finished!
